Sign Language
J & I have been learning ASL - American Sign Language, for babies. He seems to be much more comfortable signing than speaking, his favorite sign being more. I have been reading conflicting evidence lately about just how effective sign language is for a baby. I do believe this is individual choice. I have been signing to J since he was born, and have noticed that he has his own signs, even as an infant - that he uses now as a toddler. The concept of using the sign to express his needs-wants have only just begun in the last few months, just like so much else about him. It has been interesting to see how he is developing and learning. His was is to really observe, for as long as he needs, and then he will start mimicing. He will learn something outside of the house and wait until he gets home to actually do it, usually the next morning. Also he is very reserved about expressing himself outside the house or car, and I honor that. I continue to do what I do, and hold the space for him to do the same in his own timing. I truly believe this is important for parents to understand about intuitive-sensitive children. From time to time I will ask him if he can do something, such as, can you wave bye bye. But never make him do it, that is a funnuy thought to me, because J as already proved he can not be made or forced to do anything he is not wanting to do. I have to admit if I was a different person the relationship with J would prove to be very difficult, I'm not saying that it's always easy, I'm not sure what child really is easy, but I can go through what many consider to be challenges with ease and grace, well most of the time.
