Review: Done with Dieting, 30 Days of Soul-Full Eating

By Heather Mueller

In the words of my favorite food writer, MFK Fisher,

“People ask me: Why do you write about food, and eating and drinking? Why don’t
you write about the struggle for power and security, and about love, the way
others do? The easiest answer is to say that, like most other humans, I am
hungry. But there is more than that. It seems to me that our three basic needs,
for food and security and love, are so mixed and mingled and entwined that one
cannot straightly think of one without the others. So it happens that when I
write of hunger, I am really writing about love and the hunger for it, and
warmth and the love of it and the hunger for it…and the warmth and richness and
fine reality of hunger satisfied…and it is all one.”

There’s more to food than what we put into our mouths, our relationship with each bite connecting us all the way back to the farm workers and seed patenting companies, and tangled up in the hunger for security and satisfaction. Food is one of the simplest needs in the world, and also, somehow, one of the most confusing. It’s no wonder we talk and write and think about it so much.

I’ll begin this review by fully disclosing that the author of “Done with Dieting” is my mother, Maureen Whitehouse. Which means that I’m biased. But it also means that I know the author intimately—and all daughters know that we can sometimes be harsh judges of our mothers—and can honestly say from first-hand experience that it was written with full integrity. (None of that ego-massaging Self Help here.)

You’ll probably be relieved to hear that “Done with Dieting” is a non-diet. It’s during these winter months when relentless commercials for Jenny Craig and the Bownaster-Flex, coupled with inescapable facebook thumbnails peddling the “Celebrity Diet” start to feel abrasive. Who are these people to tell me how I should eat, or look, anyway?

The idea behind “Done with Dieting” is that typical diets feed our insecurities and fears—even if they do succeed in getting us to eat healthier food or drop a few pants sizes. The few times in my life when I’ve followed a strict diet (either “I’m not going to eat any sugar” or “no carbs”), was the most neurotic I’ve ever been—unhealthily obsessed with how I looked to other people.

Instead of listening to someone else tell you how and what you should eat, replacing one set of habits with another (Mary Taylor wrote on this same topic in her most recent column), “Done with Dieting” guides readers to pay attention to what their own bodies want and need to feel satisfied. That means eating what you really want, whenever you want it, and stopping when you’re full. It means mindfulness: paying attention to each bite and how certain foods affect your mental and emotional state. It means recognizing how your meals impact the world around you—from local farmers to pesticide manufacturers and the friends and family who share your table. “Soul-Full” is a nod to a feeling of complete satisfaction and fullness, brought about by the stimulation of all five senses and rooted in appreciation of the present moment (think Aretha Franklin’s voice or your mom’s best recipe). It’s about feeling full in many senses of the word, and feeling joy about mealtime, not dread or stress.

The 30-day email program is written in the form of an allegory, sort of like The Alchemist—so it’s accessible for people who may not know anything about mindfulness or nutrition. And for those who think they’ve heard it all before, each day’s lesson is accompanied by concrete exercises to help integrate the theoretical into your everyday routine. Check it out here.

Kosher & vegan

Living in SE Florida there sure are alot of Kosher establishments. Which is great for vegans! I can easily get my toffuti cream cheese & lots of other goodies at any kosher market. Also many of the kosher restaurants have lots of vegan items on the menu. I do recommend that if you are going to eat something fried - go to a dairy-kosher restaurant, much less likely that they fry animal products in the same frier as the falafel or fries.

Today we went to Kosher Kingdom in aventura, just to check out this market, and we found lots of items that are marked vegan - they even sell the challah I recently posted about. We found vegan chocolate, gnocci, raviolies, pizza, ice cream, chocolate spread, and more!

As for resturants:
Sara's didn't tickly our fancy, we like a nice dining experience, and this place seemed like a diner.
The Gourmet Carrot in Miami, while they do serve meat, is awesome. They have fresh juices and a smoothies - the only place I know of that makes fresh mango juice - oh yummy!!!! They are very popular with the locals, so be sure to make a reservation - even on a week night. The soups are always vegan, and they even have vegan dessert & soy cheese. Lots of options here and they really seem to care about the food and the experience. Once in the many many times we have gone we didn't have the best experience, our salad was soggy, the service was - ehhhh, and the food just didn't have it's normal vibrancy, we've been back since and they have bounced right back.

I see that I would surely do well in Israel, I look forward to going back again some day (i went when I was 16).

So if your having trouble finding vegan stuff in your area - search for kosher, you may be very surprised.

There are different types of Kosher, so be sure to do a little research into this before you venture out.

La Chaim - To Life

Earth Shoes - Ouch

Earth Shoes - Now here are a pair of shoes that has a great concept, but really didn't work for me or my husband.
I was taken by the design & the statements they make about the design and how it is natural to the way we walk. When actually wearing the shoes, we both wore them about 2 or 3 times and that's it.
we had the vegan line of shoes,
Vegan Solar - mine was the mary jane-looking shoe, the top strap pinched and irrateted the top of my foot, and I have very small feet & it wasn't adjustable. Mine was just like the picture, except the outside material was a fiber - not a mock-leather. The feeling of having the heal higher than the toe was pretty cool at first, but after walking for a while it just didn't work for me, and started to hurt.
Vegan Orion - I think my husband wore his once, for about 10 minutes, I couldn't get him to try them again.
I guess these shoes just aren't for everyone.

My Favorite Shoes

I'm getting lots of walking in these days, and I'm ever greatful to the people at Teva for making the best sandals ever!

Teva Volterra - My fav Sports Sandals, hiking, walking on the beach or just taking a stroll theses have been the best overall sandals in my view. I love them so much I even got a pair for my sister. One thing I found though, is that with bare feet and lots of walking - over a period of time I will get a blister from time to time, now that i live in hot florida - much less heat build up in california.

Teva Olowahu- My fav flip flop (and what a fun name) - this goes way beyond the flip flop, everything about this shoe is perfect, I can walk and walk and walk, and my feet feel great, I've never gotten a blister from them, the materials dont cause any friction, and the sole absorbs shock. There are no grips - so it is best for an everyday walking shoe then a running or hiking shoe. The design of the straps is perfect, then never slip, or slide, the show stays in place very well, and the material of the straps doesn't cause any friction on my skin.

Thank you Teva!!!!

And for sneakers, Salomon XA Comp 2. My husband and I noth have these sneakers, in fact he has 2 pairs now! I've never had a sneaker I could comfortably run in, and these do it, great for running, hiking, walking, etc... They have a mesh so they keep much cooler than most sneakers. No need to tie, the shoe laces tighten with a sliding clip - oh how great that is for me. My husband even found a position where he can eaily slide the shoe on and off & not have to tighten it - unless he goes for a walk. They did great for me with hiking, I didn't feel like I was slipping all over the place on those dry california hills.
All of these shoes are made with man made materials, so this vegan approves. And as for eco, well they all have lasted a very long time, which limits the amount of shoes I need to buy - I believe in investing in good shoes - I've spent way too much on shoes of natural fibers that have gone to waste because they just didn't give me the comfort, so i've given them away or re-sold them, but for me, i would rather just have the great shoes and be able to keep them for some time.

Vegan Challah

Hey Vegan Jews, here's a great addition to the shabbath dinner! Now you can have your own challah to bless - and it's good!
My husband finally got to have some Challah Bread!!! This is a wonderful bread, we got it at the local Whole Foods (Aventura, FL), we've tried the cinnamon & plain.

Pulls apart in perfect sizes!
